Why is 360-degree feedback so effective?

It is based on the principle that our self-awareness is very rarely as broad as the perceptions of us held by the individuals and groups of people we interact with. In other words most of us are blissfully unaware what we are 'really' like and how others see us and react to us. Johari's Window illustrates this very clearly.

Johari's Window - 360 Degree Feedback Appraisal

Some important questions you should ask yourself:

  • which is the largest area for me?
  • how much information about myself am I missing?
  • how much potential am I hiding?

The Feedback Framework

The 360-degree appraisal process uses a questionnaire (the quality of which is paramount to the success of the process) to frame and gather the perceptions of individuals and groups of people directly and indirectly within a leader's field of impact. The results form the basis of the 'feedback'.

At The Learning Curve our experience has taught us that the usefulness of the results can be vastly improved if the questionnaire is actually 'built' in collaboration with those who will participate in the feedback and then validated by a Chartered Occupational Psychologist (experienced in questionnaire design).
